Aislin Animates Political Cartoons

ANIMAZE PRESENTS: A conversation with legendary political cartoonist Aislin as he moves into his next frontier: animation.

AISLIN is the name of Terry Mosher’s elder daughter, and the nom de plume that he has used for over forty-five years as the political cartoonist for the Montreal Gazette. Mosher is also the President Emeritus of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists.

Print media is facing turbulent times, but political cartoons have an enduring popularity. On digital platforms, animating political cartoons, like Pulitzer Prize-winner Mark Fiore and his team have been doing for over three years, simply makes sense. However, most past attempts have been awkward, time consuming and expensive.

Aislin and his team of Mary Hughson and David Sidaway have come up with several approaches for a new creative process – clever animations with pop that can be produced inexpensively within a day! He will talk about these early attempts, and the exciting possibilities they hold for other animators in a new media landscape.

In addition to his own experiments in animation, Aislin will be showing a number of political cartoonists who are now animating their work and presenting it online: KAL (Kevin Kallaugher) of the Economist, Ann Telnaes of The Washington Post, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Mark Fiore in San Francisco, Dan Murphy in Ireland and Montreal’s own Serge Chapleau of La Presse.

Mosher is a regular speaker on the topics of humour, history and the importance of cartooning as a communications tool. He has appeared at national conferences such as Idea City, the Banff Festival for The Arts, Montreal’s Canadian Club and numerous writers’ festivals.

Mosher was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in May 2003. From April 7th to August 13th, 2017, Montreal’s McCord Museum will host a retrospective of Aislin’s work entitiled Aislin: 50 Years of Cartooning – from Trudeau to Trudeau.
