Panel: State of the Industry
13:30 - 14:30
with Athena Georgaklis, Frank Saperstein, Ariane Smith

The internet is no longer the wave of the future: it's the wave of the present. Animation has benefited from technological advancement to assume a commanding position at the box office, but confidence in traditional distribution models has been badly shaken. Consumer habits continue to change rapidly, and TV producers must reckon with the phenomenon of cord-cutting. Where do we stand in the age of franchises and risk-averse investors, and where do we go from here? with Teletoon Director of Content Athena Georgaklis, Enchanted Thyme CEO Ariane Smith, Tricon Kids and Family EVP Frank Saperstein. http://animazefestival.com/events/event/panel-state-of-the-industry/

Every technology that comes into filmmaking is first a gimmick. It takes a while for filmmakers to understand how to use it.۪ --Pixar cofounder John Lasseter

Immersive tech experts and content creators discuss how to use these new mediums to their full potential in enabling storytelling that can move and inspire. Aislin Animates Politics
13:00 - 14:00

Print media is facing turbulent times, but political cartoons have enduring popularity. On digital platforms, animating political cartoons, like Pulitzer Prize-winner Mark Fiore and his team have been doing for over three years, simply makes sense. Most past attempts, however, have proved awkward, time consuming and expensive. Aislin and his team of Mary Hughson and David Sidaway have come up with several approaches for a new creative process - clever animations with pop that can be produced inexpensively within a day! The three will talk about these early attempts, and the exciting possibilities they hold for other animators in a new media landscape. AISLIN is the name of Terry Mosher's elder daughter, and the nom de plume that he has used for over forty-five years as the political cartoonist for the Montreal Gazette. Mosher is also the President Emeritus of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists. Mosher is a regular speaker on the topics of humour, history and the importance of cartooning as a communications tool. He has appeared at national conferences such as Idea City, the Banff Festival for The Arts, Montreal's Canadian Club and numerous writers' festivals. Mosher was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in May 2003. From April 7th to August 13th, 2017, Montreal۪s McCord Museum will host a retrospective of Aislin۪s work entitiled Aislin: 50 Years of Cartooning - from Trudeau to Trudeau.
